Start with the right stream and evidence

FAQ
- What does the fee cover? Use the Visa Pricing Estimator and applicable official page. Government charges, health checks, insurance, biometrics and professional services may be separate.
- Is the processing time accurate? Official tools are a reference based on recently decided applications and do not promise an individual outcome.
- Is a medical examination required? The answer depends on the visa, travel plans and individual circumstances. Check the official checklist and any request from Home Affairs.
- How current is this information? Rules can change. Check current Home Affairs guidance again before lodging.
Use the official source before lodging
Do not rely on an old TSS checklist, a generic fee, a processing-time claim or a promised permanent-residence outcome. Check the current Skills in Demand 482 page and its Core Skills stream guidance. Eligibility for any later visa is separate and never automatic.
482 Visa: Common Questions
Can I apply for a 482 visa without an employer?
No. The 482 is an employer-sponsored visa. An approved sponsor has to nominate you for an occupation before a visa can be granted, so the first step is the employer, not the application form.
Is the 482 the same as the old TSS visa?
The 482 is now the Skills in Demand visa and it replaced the old TSS. Old TSS checklists, fees and processing times no longer apply, so use the current Home Affairs page rather than an older guide.
Does the 482 lead to permanent residence?
Not automatically. A 482 holder may be able to move to permanent residence through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream, but that requires your employer to nominate you again, a period of sponsored work, and meeting the other criteria for your occupation. Check the current Home Affairs page for your situation.
What evidence will I need to prepare?
Typically evidence of relevant experience, English, a skills assessment where the occupation requires one, plus health and character checks. The exact list depends on the stream and occupation, and it is confirmed against the official source before lodging.
Requirements, fees and processing times are set by the Department of Home Affairs and can change. Always check the official page before you lodge. We do not promise an outcome.
