The Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) is a visitor-visa option for eligible passport holders. Malaysia appears on the Department of Home Affairs list of passports eligible for an ETA. That does not mean every traveller should assume the ETA is suitable for their circumstances.

When ETA 601 is worth checking first
ETA 601 may be relevant when you hold an eligible Malaysian passport and your planned visit fits the official visitor-visa purpose and conditions. Your visa grant notice is the document that confirms the conditions that apply to you.
Do not rely on a blog, agent, or old social-media post to decide whether you are eligible. Passport type, travel purpose, personal history, and the current official rules matter.
Important situations to handle carefully
Home Affairs says that a person with a criminal conviction in any country should apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) and provide evidence about the conviction. The Department also says that a person who is ineligible for, or unable to apply for, an ETA in the Australian ETA app can apply online for another visa that suits their needs through ImmiAccount.
That is why ETA 601 is not a guaranteed "easy" route. If a situation is not straightforward, verify the official pathway before lodging anything.
ETA 601 versus Visitor 600
The right comparison is not "fast versus slow" or "easy versus safe." It is whether the visa fits the applicant's official eligibility and intended activity.
