Avoid these 601 Visa Mistakes

The Subclass 601 ETA is easy to get, but also easy to lose. A single mistake can lead to a refusal, cancellation at the airport, or a long-term ban.

Here are the top mistakes Malaysians make with the 601 Visa.

1. The "Criminal Record" Trap

The ETA app asks: "Have you ever had a criminal conviction?"

  • The Mistake: Lying and saying "No" when you have a minor record (e.g., Drink Driving 10 years ago).
  • The Consequence: If Australia shares data with your country (and they do), this is Visa Fraud. You will be refused for providing false information.
  • The Solution: If you have ANY record, do not use the ETA. Apply for a Subclass 600 (Tourist Stream) and declare your history honestly.

2. The "3-Month" Overstay

  • The Rule: The visa is valid for 12 months, but you can only stay for 3 months per visit.
  • The Mistake: Thinking you can stay for the full 12 months.
  • The Consequence: Overstaying makes you an "unlawful non-citizen". You will be detained and likely banned from re-entering for 3 years.

3. The "Visa Run" (Frequent Returns)

  • The Behavior: Staying for 3 months, flying to Bali/NZ for a weekend, and trying to return immediately for another 3 months.
  • The Red Flag: Border Force officers will suspect you are living or working in Australia illegally.
  • The Outcome: Cancellation of visa at the airport and immediate deportation.

4. Relying on "Instant" Approval

While 90% of ETAs are instant, some go to "Further Assessment".

  • The Mistake: Booking non-refundable flights before getting the ETA.
  • The Fix: Always apply at least 2 weeks before you fly, just in case.

Tip: If your ETA is refused, do not keep applying. It won't work. Seek professional advice to apply for a Subclass 600 instead.
