Australia Student visa 500 for Malaysians: use the Genuine Student requirement
For Student visa (subclass 500) applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024, Home Affairs uses the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Older articles may still refer to the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement; do not copy an old GTE template into a current application.
The Department assesses the information in your application and your individual circumstances. A polished generic statement, an agent's wording, or a course offer cannot guarantee a visa outcome.
What should a Genuine Student response explain?
Answer the current official GS questions in your own words and in English, using facts that your documents can support. Home Affairs asks applicants to explain matters such as their current circumstances, why they chose the course and education provider, and how the course may benefit them.
Focus on a clear, truthful explanation of your study plan. Do not write what you think an officer “wants to hear,” and do not make a claim that conflicts with your education, employment, finances or immigration history.
Student 500 documents: not one universal Malaysian checklist
The documents Home Affairs requests can vary with the applicant, passport country, education provider and application circumstances. The official Student 500 page identifies items that can include:
- a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE);
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC);
- evidence of financial capacity;
- English-language evidence where it applies;
- identity, health and character material; and
- any additional information requested through the official process.
Use the official document checklist for your own circumstances before lodging. It is not safe to assume that another student's checklist, a social-media video or a generic agency list is complete for you.
Financial capacity evidence: make the explanation match the records
Provide only genuine financial evidence and make sure it matches the information in your application. The official requirements can depend on the evidence type and your circumstances. Do not treat a single bank-balance number, a sudden deposit, or a borrowed document as a shortcut to approval.
If a parent, spouse or another person supports your studies, explain the relationship and financial arrangement truthfully and supply the documents required for your application. Home Affairs can ask for further information.
