Australia Visitor Visa Invitation Letter
For the Tourist stream, an invitation letter is not strictly mandatory — but if you are staying with someone in Australia or they are paying for the trip, lodging without one is a self-inflicted risk. For the Sponsored Family stream, it is replaced by a mandatory Form 1149.
Do you actually need an invitation letter?
Home Affairs does not publish a mandatory checklist for personal invitation letters, and the Tourist stream does not require one. In practice refusal records keep pointing at the same gaps: the officer had no way to confirm where the applicant was staying or who was paying.
Lodge one if…
- You are staying at the host's home
- The host is paying any part of the trip
- You are visiting close family and requesting a longer stay
- You have little or no travel history
Less critical if…
- You are on a booked tour with hotels prepaid
- You are fully self-funding and staying in hotels
- You have a strong Australian travel record
Even when it is optional, a good letter costs one page and answers two questions before they are asked: where will you sleep, and who is paying.
What the letter must contain
Four blocks. Missing any one of them is where most letters fail.

Add one short paragraph on the visitor's ties back home — employment with approved leave, enrolled studies, dependants, property. That paragraph is what turns an invitation into genuine-temporary-entrant evidence instead of a hospitality note.

Documents the host must attach
Status proof
Australian passport copy, PR grant letter, or visa grant notice — plus a VEVO check if the host is on a temporary visa.
Financial proof
Only if the host is paying: last 3 months of bank statements and recent payslips. A promise to pay without proof contradicts itself.
Address proof
Utility bill or lease showing the host actually lives where the visitor says they will stay.
The host does not need to be a citizen or permanent resident to write a personal invitation letter — anyone lawfully in Australia can, including holders of 482, 500 or 485 visas. That changes under the Sponsored Family stream below.
Three lines that hurt more than they help
"They have no real reason to go back home."
Never write this, even if you think it explains something. The letter should state the visitor's ties, never speculate on their absence.
"We will cover everything they need."
Fine as a sentence, fatal without attachments. If the host claims to pay, the evidence must be in the file. See our bank statement requirements for the applicant's own side.
Requesting 12 months "just in case"
A long stay with a vague reason reads as an intention to live in Australia. Ask for the days you can justify with events, and no more.
Form 1149: when a letter is not enough
The Sponsored Family stream is a different route inside subclass 600. A personal invitation letter cannot be used there — Form 1149 (Application for Sponsorship for Sponsored Family Visitors) is mandatory and is a legally binding financial and accommodation guarantee, not a friendly note.
Eligible sponsors
Australian citizen or permanent resident, 18 or over, settled in Australia. Eligible relationships:
- Parent, child, spouse or de facto partner
- Brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild
- Aunt, uncle, niece, nephew
- Step-equivalents of any of the above
One Form 1149 can cover a family group travelling together for the same trip.
Not eligible
- Cousins, friends, fiancés, extended relatives
- Sponsors who are only temporary visa holders
These relationships must use the Tourist stream with a personal invitation letter instead.
Two practical details people get wrong
- Form 1149 is a static PDF. It cannot be filled online. Download, complete and sign, then scan and upload into the visitor's ImmiAccount.
- A security bond request is not a refusal. Home Affairs may ask the sponsor for a bond — commonly in the AUD 5,000 to 15,000 range per visitor — refunded once the visitor departs on time. It means the file is progressing.
Three mistakes Malaysian applicants make
1. The host on a temporary visa writes like a citizen
A host on a 482 or 500 visa can invite — but the letter must state their actual status and attach a VEVO check. Writing "I am living in Australia" and leaving it there invites an adverse inference.
2. Parents' names do not match across documents
Malaysian passports, ICs and birth certificates do not always render names identically. The invitation letter must copy the passport spelling exactly, or the officer cannot be sure the letter refers to the applicant.
3. Requesting 12 months with no events to justify it
For parents visiting children, a long stay is legitimate — but it needs a reason: a grandchild's birth, a graduation date, a medical appointment, helping after a new baby. Put the dates in the letter.
Invitation letter FAQ
Does an invitation letter guarantee approval?
No. It is supporting evidence, not a decision. An invitation from someone in Australia can even raise the risk level if the applicant's own ties to Malaysia are weak. It helps most when the applicant's file is already solid.
Can my friend invite me, or must it be family?
A friend can write a personal invitation letter for the Tourist stream. Friends cannot sponsor under the Sponsored Family stream — Form 1149 is limited to eligible family relationships.
Does the letter need to be certified or notarised?
A personal invitation letter does not, but any copy of the host's passport or visa grant attached to it should be a certified copy. Form 1149 must be signed in full by the sponsor.
How long does a sponsored family application take?
Published times change monthly and the Sponsored Family stream runs longer than the Tourist stream. Check the current figures in our waiting time guide before booking flights.
