The short answer
Malaysia is on Canada's visa-required list. That means a Malaysian passport holder normally needs a visitor visa (officially called a temporary resident visa, or TRV) to travel to Canada.
The cost is CAD 100 for the visa plus CAD 85 for biometrics.
But there is a change almost nobody has told Malaysian travellers about. Since 26 May 2026, some Malaysians may be able to apply for an eTA at CAD 7 instead of a visa at CAD 100 — and skip the passport submission entirely.
It depends on two things, and if you do not meet both, the visa is still your only route. That test is in section 2, and it is the first thing to check before you pay anyone anything.
1. The one thing that decides your case
Canadian visa officers are not primarily checking whether you can afford the trip. They are checking one question: will you leave?
Every refusal letter from Malaysia says essentially the same thing in different words — the officer was not satisfied you would depart Canada at the end of your authorised stay. Everything in the file either supports that conclusion or undermines it.
This is why a file with a healthy bank balance still gets refused, and a file with a modest balance sometimes gets through. Money is evidence. It is not the argument.
2. The May 2026 change: eTA instead of a visa
Canada runs a programme that lets citizens of some visa-required countries apply for an eTA instead of a visa, when travelling by air. Malaysia was added to that programme on 26 May 2026.
You qualify only if you meet all three of these:
One — you are flying. To or through a Canadian airport. If you arrive by car, bus, train or boat — including a cruise ship stop where you never leave the ship — you still need a full visitor visa. There is no eTA workaround for a land or sea arrival.
Two — the trip is temporary, normally up to 6 months.
Three — you have one of these two things:
- you have held a Canadian visitor visa at any point in the past 10 years, or
- you currently hold a valid US nonimmigrant visa (a US visitor or student visa, for example). It must be valid on the day you apply for the eTA, but it does not have to still be valid when you fly.
If the US visa sits in a different passport from the one you will travel on, both passports must be from eligible countries, and you have to declare the situation in the background questions of the eTA form with the other passport number.
The eTA costs CAD 7, is valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and lets you stay up to 6 months per entry. It is linked electronically to one specific passport. New passport means new eTA.
One caution worth stating plainly. Canada's own published country list for this programme has not been updated to show Malaysia yet, even though four separate official pages — and the Government of Canada's own visa application centre operator in Malaysia — have announced the 26 May 2026 change. Before you pay, run the official "find out what you need to travel to Canada" tool with your own passport and travel details. That tool is the only answer that matters on the day you apply.
3. Which one applies to you
| Your situation | What you need |
|---|---|
| Flying, and you held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years | eTA (CAD 7) or visa — eTA is faster and cheaper |
| Flying, and you hold a valid US visa now | eTA (CAD 7) or visa — eTA is faster and cheaper |
| Flying, no Canadian visa history and no US visa | Visitor visa (CAD 100 + CAD 85) |
| Arriving by land or sea, from the US or anywhere | Visitor visa, regardless of the above |
| Going to work or study for more than 6 months | Work permit or study permit — not a visitor visa |
| Visiting a child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or PR, for a long stay | Super visa — see section 8 |
4. What it actually costs
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor visa (TRV) application | CAD 100 per person | Government fee |
| Biometrics | CAD 85 per person | Maximum CAD 170 for a family applying together |
| eTA (if eligible) | CAD 7 per person | Air travel only |
| Visa Application Centre services | Optional | Photography RM42, photocopy RM2, one-way courier RM98 (Malaysia rates) |
| Medical exam | If IRCC requests it | Paid to a panel physician |
| Translations | If documents are not in English or French | Must be certified |
The government fees are fixed. The part people underestimate is the third-party cost: medical exams, certified translations, and courier charges add up, and none of them are refundable if the application is refused.
5. Biometrics — the step that closes files
Most applicants must give fingerprints and a photo. The exemptions that matter for Malaysians: children under 14, applicants over 79, and people applying for an eTA.
You cannot walk in. You must book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre. In Malaysia there is one:
Canada Visa Application Centre, Kuala Lumpur 3F West Block, Wisma Golden Eagle Realty, 142-A Jalan Ampang, Kampung Baru, 50450 Kuala Lumpur Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00
Two things go wrong here more than anywhere else in the process:
Missing the deadline. After you submit, IRCC issues a Biometric Instruction Letter. That letter carries a deadline. If you miss it, the application is closed — not paused, not extended. Book the appointment the day the letter arrives, not the week before the deadline.
Paying twice for nothing. Once your biometrics are on file, IRCC keeps them. Check whether yours are still valid before paying the CAD 85 again.
Also note what the VAC is and is not: it collects biometrics and moves passports. It does not make decisions and is expressly forbidden from giving you visa advice. Anyone at a counter offering to "review your chances" is outside their remit.
6. The documents that actually decide the case
Your personalised checklist in the online portal is generated for your specific situation and is the authoritative list. Do not work from a checklist you found online — including this one. That said, the categories that carry the decision are always the same:
Passport. Valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned travel date. You need a clear colour copy of the bio page and every page with a stamp, visa or marking. If your passport needs renewing, renew it before you apply — not after.
Purpose of travel. What you are doing, where you are staying, for how long, and who you are seeing. If someone in Canada is hosting you, an official letter of invitation carries real weight — and the relationship behind it has to be documented, not asserted.
Funds. Not a magic number. Statements covering a reasonable period, that match the income you declared, with an explanation for anything unusual. A large deposit two weeks before you apply is a liability, not an asset.
Ties to Malaysia. Employment with a letter and approved leave, a running business, current study, dependants, property. This is the section that answers the officer's real question.
Travel history. Previous trips with stamps to prove you went and came back. An empty passport is not an automatic refusal, but it does shift the burden onto the rest of the file.
Family information form. Listed in your checklist. It must be complete — omitted siblings and children are treated as misrepresentation, not as an oversight.
7. Why Malaysian files get refused
These are the patterns, in rough order of frequency:
A visit that reads as an intention to stay. Visiting "a friend" with no evidence of the friendship, no itinerary, and no return date. The officer has seen this file a thousand times.
Funds that do not match the story. A declared salary of RM 4,000 with RM 60,000 in the account raises a question the applicant never answers.
Templated files. Identical cover letters, identical itineraries, identical wording across unrelated applicants. Officers read a lot of files. Templates are recognisable, and they read as preparation by someone who does not know the applicant.
An undisclosed refusal. Canada, the US, Australia, the UK — any of them. Concealing one converts an eligibility question into a credibility problem, and the second is much harder to recover from.
The wrong category. Applying for a visitor visa to do something that legally requires a work or study permit. This does not get fixed at the border.
Biometrics missed. Covered above, and entirely avoidable.
8. Single or multiple entry — the 10-year visa is not automatic
A multiple-entry visa lets you enter Canada as often as you like while it is valid, for a maximum of 10 years — or until your passport or your biometrics expire, whichever comes first.
But 10 years is the ceiling, not the default. IRCC's own guidance to its officers says they should exercise judgement on whether to issue single or multiple entry, and on how long the visa should last. The factors they weigh include:
- whether the trip is a one-off event or a recurring family visit
- whether you have a stable, ongoing source of income that could fund repeated trips
- whether the host in Canada is established and can support the visits
- your ties to Malaysia and whether they are likely to change
- your previous travel and whether you complied with past visa conditions
- any previous refusal, by Canada or any other country
Practically: a first-time applicant with a one-off holiday and no travel history is more likely to receive a single-entry visa valid for the length of the trip. Someone with a documented history of compliance and family in Canada is more likely to get multiple entry for longer.
9. If your child or grandchild lives in Canada: the super visa
The super visa is a separate route for parents and grandparents. It allows a stay of up to 5 years per entry, which no ordinary visitor visa does.
The host must be your biological or adopted child or grandchild, at least 18, living in Canada, and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian. The host must also meet IRCC's minimum necessary income — and their spouse or common-law partner may co-sign to help meet it. Siblings cannot co-sign.
The applicant must be outside Canada when applying, and must hold private health insurance that:
- is valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
- provides minimum CAD 100,000 in emergency coverage
- covers health care, hospitalisation and repatriation
- is paid in full (a quote is not accepted)
- comes from a Canadian insurer, or a foreign insurer authorised by OSFI to do insurance business in Canada
A medical exam with an approved panel physician is also required, plus proof of the parent-child relationship — usually the host's birth certificate.
10. Step by step
- Run the official eligibility tool with your passport and travel plans. Visa or eTA — settle this before anything else.
- Check your passport. Six months of validity beyond travel, and enough blank pages.
- Build the file from the personalised checklist, not from a blog post.
- Submit online and pay the government fees.
- When the Biometric Instruction Letter arrives, book the VAC appointment immediately. Kuala Lumpur, Monday to Friday.
- Give biometrics.
- Wait for the passport request letter, then submit your passport through the VAC. Do not send it anywhere until you are asked.
- Receive the decision. If approved, check that the visa dates and entries match what you expected.
- Do not book non-refundable flights or accommodation before the visa is in your hand. IRCC states plainly that processing times are estimates, not commitments.
11. Where AUSVJ helps — and what we do not do
To be clear about the boundary, because it matters legally: IRCC requires anyone who represents you or gives you immigration advice for a fee to be licensed — a CICC-registered consultant, a lawyer, or a Quebec notary. We are not a Canadian licensed consultant, and we do not present ourselves as one.
So the work splits like this. We handle the preparation — assembling, translating, cross-checking and stress-testing the file before it is lodged. The final advice and any representation is handled by a licensed Canadian practitioner, who reviews the file and signs off on the strategy.
What we actually do on a Canada file:
We settle the visa-versus-eTA question first. Since May 2026 this is no longer obvious, and getting it wrong means paying CAD 100 for something a CAD 7 eTA would have covered — or worse, applying for an eTA you are not eligible for and losing the trip.
We read the file against itself. Salary letter against bank statements against the itinerary against the invitation letter. The contradictions are what refuse applications, and they are invisible if you check each document on its own.
We check the purpose-of-travel narrative. Most refusals are not document failures. They are a file that never answered the officer's one question convincingly.
We check the timing. Biometrics deadlines, passport validity, medical exam windows — these are the mechanical failures that waste months.
We tell you when not to apply yet. Sometimes the honest answer is three more months of statements, or a corrected employment letter, or renewing the passport first. Lodging now and hoping is how people collect refusals that follow them for years.
12. Frequently asked questions
Do Malaysians need a visa for Canada? Yes, by default. Malaysia is on Canada's visa-required list. Since 26 May 2026, some Malaysians may qualify for an eTA instead when flying — but only if they held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid US visa.
How much does it cost? CAD 100 for the visitor visa plus CAD 85 for biometrics per person, or CAD 7 for an eTA if you qualify. Medical exams, translations and VAC service charges are extra.
How long is a Canadian visitor visa valid? Up to 10 years maximum, or until your passport or biometrics expire — whichever comes first. Officers decide the actual length; 10 years is not automatic.
How long can I stay? Normally up to 6 months per entry. The exact period is decided at the border, not by the visa.
Can I apply from inside Canada? For a visitor visa, you apply from outside. A super visa applicant must be outside Canada when applying.
Do I need a medical exam? Only if IRCC asks you to complete one. Super visa applicants always do.
Can I work on a visitor visa? No. Working requires a work permit. A visitor visa does not authorise employment, and working on one can result in removal and a future inadmissibility finding.
I was refused before. Can I apply again? Yes, but reapplying without changing anything produces the same result. Identify the specific reason in the refusal letter and change that fact. See the refusal guide for how refusal letters are structured — the reasoning applies across countries.
Do you guarantee approval? No. Nobody can. The decision is made by an IRCC officer. What we can do is make sure the file does not refuse itself.
